Heartwarming Tale: Loyal German Shepherds Desperately Seek Forever Home Following Owner’s Passing
Two closely bonded German shepherd canines residing at the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary in Port Clinton, Ohio, are eagerly seeking a new place to call home. These 5-year-old siblings previously lived with their owner, who unfortunately passed away at the age of 90.
Keith Hodkinson, a local radio host who assists at the sanctuary, emphasized the significance of finding the perfect individual to adopt these two dogs. Speaking to the media he stated, “It’s crucial that we discover the right person for these two canines.”

Upon receiving a request for assistance in transporting the dogs from Island Safe Harbor, Hodkinson was astounded by the remarkable bond between them. What sets them apart from the other dogs under the sanctuary’s care is their size; each of them weighs well over 100 pounds. Moreover, German shepherds necessitate special attention as they require ample space to roam and engage in activities to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Hence, finding an ideal forever home for these two pups might pose a challenge.
To facilitate their adoption, the nonprofit organization shared comprehensive information and photographs of the dogs on its website and Facebook page. In a heartfelt post, founder Nancy Benevento expressed her commitment to fulfilling a promise made to the deceased owner through prayers and dreams. She wrote, “I assure the owner, in my deepest prayers and dreams, that we will make every effort to secure them a HOME – a place with a YARD and meaningful tasks.” She further added, “He cherished them with all his heart and soul. I believe he is watching from heaven, hoping with all his heart that his beloved boys will continue to be well-cared for.”
Maintaining the dogs’ companionship is of utmost importance, as they have spent all five years of their lives together. Separating them is not an option. Brownie, weighing 144 pounds, and Blackie, weighing 130 pounds, are 5-year-old German shepherds from the same litter. Both are neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and free from any hip issues, which are common health concerns for this breed. Brownie assumes the role of the alpha, gently correcting Blackie, who possesses a more mild-tempered nature. Although Brownie may appear intimidating, he does not display aggression towards humans.
In their previous home, these loyal canines warmly greeted customers at their owner’s on-site shop during the day, and diligently guarded the house throughout the night. They were fortunate to have a spacious, two-acre fenced-in yard to explore and play in.
“We aim to provide them with a fulfilling life,” Hodkinson expressed to the media. “At 5 years old, they still have a long journey ahead… Once you get to know them, you’ll discover their loving nature.”
